New York, New York Area Code

New York, NY is officially utilizing an area code overlay in which area codes 212, 332, 646 and 917 serve the same geographic area in Manhattan and area codes 347, 718, 929 serves the New York boroughs of The Bronx, Brooklyn, New York City, Queens, and Staten Island and the Marble Hill area of Manhattan due to its physically proximity to the Bronx. Ten digit dialing (area code + seven digit number) is necessary because in the overlay plans three different homes in the same geographic area can have the same seven digit phone number but each would have a different area code.

In addition to New York, NY area codes 212 serves only Manhattan and is overlaid with area codes 332, 646 and 917. Area code 917 is used primarily for mobile devices but is assignable to landlines when needed.
