On December 12, 2019 The U.S. Federal Communications Commission approved the three digit dialing code 988 as an abbreviated phone number for the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline which now is called by dialing 1-800-273-TALK. The FCC had previously pointed out that 988 would be easier to remember and dial. In 2018 over 2 million calls were received by the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline.
