Area code 206 was officially put into service on 01/01/1947. Area code 206 was one of the original area codes assigned to the state of Washington. In 1957 area code 206 was split to form area code 509. In 1995 area code 206 was split to form area code 360. In 1997 area code 206 was split to form area codes 253 and 425.
On June 10, 2025 area code 564 will be expanded to serve area code 206 as an overlay. Currently area code 564 serves as an overlay of area code 360.
