Florida is currently using twenty-two area codes. Florida utilizes six area code overlay plans, often called overlay complexes.
Area code 305 originally covered all of Florida when it was established in 1947. Florida quickly began to need more area codes as the population growth surged. In 1953 area code 305 was split to form area code 813. Twelve years later in 1965 area code was split again to form area code 904.

Area code 305 was put into service. In 1953 area code 305 was split to form area code 813. In 1965 area code 305 was split to form area code 904. In 1988 area code 305 was split to form area code 407. In 1995 area code 305 was split to form area code 954. In 1998 area code 305 was partially overlaid with area code 786. In 2008 area code 305 was completely overlaid with area code 786.

Area code 813 was put into service. Area code 813 was created from a split of area code 305. In 1995 area code 813 was split to form area code 941. In 1998 area code 813 was split to form area code 727.
Area code 904 was put into service. Area code 904 was created from a split of area code 305. In 1995 area code 904 was split to form area code 352. In 1997 area code 904 was split to form area code 850. In 2001 area code 904 was split to form area code 386.
04/16/1988
Area code 407 was put into service. Area code 407 was created from a split of area code 305. In 1996 area code 407 was split to form area code 561. In 1999 area code 407 was partially overlaid with area code 321.
05/28/1995
Area code 941 was put into service. Area code 941 was created from a split of area code 813. In 1999 area code 941 was split to form area code 863. In 2002 area code 941 was split to form area code 239.
09/11/1995
Area code 954 was put into service. Area code 954 was created from a split of area code 305. In 2001 area code 954 was overlaid with area code 754.

Area code 352 was put into service. Area code 352 was created from a split of area code 904.
05/13/1996
Area code 561 was put into service. In 2002 area code 561 was split to form area code 772.
06/23/1997
Area code 850 was put into service. Area code 850 was created from a split of area code 904.

Area code 786 was put into service. Area code 786 was implemented as a partial overlay of area code 305 covering Miami-Dade County.

Area code 727 was put into service. Area code 727 was created from a split of area code 813.
09/20/1999
Area code 863 was put into service. Area code 863 was created from a split of area code 941.
11/01/1999
Area code 321 was put into service. Area code 321 covers the "Space Coast" which includes Cape Canaveral, Cocoa Beach, Melbourne and Titusville and is also a partial overlay of area code 407.

Area code 386 was put into service. Area code 386 was created from a split of area code 904.

Area code 754 was put into service. Area code 754 is an overlay of area code 954.
