Area code 557 was put into service as an all services overlay of area code 314 on 08/12/2022. Ten digit dialing (area code + seven digit number) is necessary in the 314/557 overlay because different homes in the same geographic area can have the same seven digit phone number but each would have a different area code.
Previously the Missouri Public Service Commission approved area code 557 as an all services overlay of area area 314 on October 24, 2000. However, on September 25, 2001, the Commission suspended the implementation of area code 557 due to a decrease in demand for new phone service in the 314 area code.
